Tokyo is loud, crazy and full of high rises and flashing lights.. Is this is what you imagine Tokyo to be, yes you are right. But there is another side to the craziness of this metropolitan city. Just a few metro / tube stops away there are Ueno and Yanaka – two more traditional and quiet districts where time just stood still. Hence, the area should be a must-see on your Tokyo sightseeing list!
If you are staying in Shinbuku, Shibuya or Ikebukuro, just take the Yamanote line which will bring you straight to Ueno, the perfect spot to start your walking tour through the hidden neighbourhoods with tiny alleys and lots of little temples and shrines.
Once you have crossed the Ueno park and are heading to Yanaka, make a stop at this absolutely lovely tea place that is on a little corner just off the main street. I have pinned it on the above Google map. Nobody spoke English in the café and the name of the place was written in Japanese signs – hence I still have no clue what the name of this cosy place was. Instead, use the Google map above and the photo of the place below for your guidance ;) Once you have arrived in Tokyo you will realise that this is how it works, don’t rely on names – they are more often than not in Japanese signs and you will not be able to read anything!
Once you have entered this cute tea place, you are greeted by a lovely lady who speaks Japanese only. Once you have chosen your sweets and tea and paid at the counter, find a cosy spot and wait for your order to be served.
I chose Matcha tea and a little Japanese sweet beans dessert which was super yummy!
I can really recommend this place, it was one of the sweetest greetings I received and the tea as well as the dessert were very good. Bring a good book, relax and let time stand still :)
