Budapest is a such a beautiful city to visit. It is the capital and largest city of Hungary and has plenty of historical buildings, cultural things as well as fun things to do. Not to forget Budapest’s friendly people. Should you ever get lost in the old streets of the city because you have been watching the architectural beauty too closely, they are sure to help you find your way back. Budapest is known for its beautiful thermal baths which are spread throughout the city. This is also one of the main reasons why we chose Budapest for a girl’s trip weekend. I stayed one night by myself in a cute small boutique hotel and moved over to the Buddha-Bar Hotel once my friends arrived. When we were planning the trip, my friend showed me some holiday rental properties (browse here to check them out), and I regretted booking a hotel once I’d seen them. I never knew how cheap and spacious holiday apartments could be! The hotel was beautiful but I’d definitely consider an apartment if I was to come again.
SIGHTSEEING AND DAY-TIME IN BUDAPEST
If you only have a few days in Budapest I would recommend to take a tour on the hop-on hop-off bus that conveniently drives you around all the major sightseeing points. Also the boat tour is very nice but if I had to choose I’d rather take the tour bus again as Budapest’s streets and architecture is too beautiful to be missed out when on the boat. The opera is very beautiful so a tour or actually watching an opera is a great thing to do in Budapest.
BUDAPEST THERMAL BATHS
Being the city of SPAs, Budapest naturally has quite a variety of different thermal baths to choose from. The one I went to was the Széchenyi Thermal Bath. I went there on a Thursday night and it was just beautiful. I had a 30 min back massage which was done very professionally. Although I must say that if you are after a more stylish SPA experience, you will not find this in this thermal SPA. I’d recommend to go to a ‘real’ SPA place or a 4-5 star hotel, rather than to a thermal bath where the focus is more on the baths rather than stylish treatment rooms. Nevertheless I enjoyed the massage and then took a swim in the swimming pool outside which is especially beautiful during the night when the sky is already dark. Though I was there by myself I can see that it is quite a romantic hideaway for couples. I also heard very good things about the Gellért Bath to which I was planning to go as well but didn’t make it in the end.
WHERE TO GO FOR DINNER, DRINKS AND DANCE IN BUDAPEST
Three places that I can highly recommend for dinner are: Spoon Restaurant, Buddha Bar Hotel Restaurant and New York Cafe – Boscolo Budapest. My favourite of the three is Spoon restaurant because the food is delicious, the service outstanding and the view amazing. The restaurant is on a boat on the Danube – very romantic.
In terms of cocktail bars, definitely Buddha Bar Hotel Bar – amazing chill out music and a yummy selection of really good cocktails. For dancing we went to Ötkert and Szimpla. Both places are entirely different but fun! While Ötkert is a dance club with several different rooms and types of dance music, Szimpla is the perfect choice if you are after a wine of beer in a more pub-like place. Szimpla is quite unique and hard to describe – it is a place that could as well be located in Shoreditch or Camden in London. You have to see for yourself!
WHERE TO STAY IN BUDAPEST
There are a number of really beautiful hotels in Budapest. Here are two options you can’t go wrong with:
I stayed one night in the Andrassy Thai Hotel which is located centrally within two minutes walking distance from Deák Square, one of the main squares in the city. This is a really cute boutique hotel that is just perfect for a weekend trip. The hotel has a good standard and is super affordable. I think I paid less than £50 per night. The hotel is a bit tricky to find as it is located within an old building on one of the main shopping streets in Budapest. But once you have found your way, you are greeted by a very friendly receptionist.
I just love Buddha Bar. I love their restaurant and bar in London, I love Buddha Bar music and clearly the Buddha Bar Hotel in Budapest is one of my favourite hotels. The style is simply gorgeous. The best thing is the sound system that the suite had. You simply select your Buddha Bar chill out music album on the screen in the room and then no matter where you walk in the suite, there are music boxes everywhere. Even while taking a shower, you can listen to chill out music at an amazing audio quality. The second best thing about the suite was the huge bath tub we had. I did mention that it was a girls weekend trip? So on the Saturday we came back from out boat trip and still had some time before our SPA treatments in the hotel would start. We initially planned to hang out in the hotel’s SPA but it was so small (the only thing to criticise) that we decided we all have a bikini party in the bath tub (no, these photos are not public :) ).
