Do you remember the movie The Beach with Leonardo DiCaprio? I absolutely loved this movie! And no, I was not a Leonardo fan at the time. Nowadays, yes – big fan as he is an amazing actor. But back then I loved the movie because of the story and the wonderful paradise pictures. In 2000 when the movie aired I had not been bitten by the travel bug. Yes, I did travel to beautiful beaches and destinations but the idea of travelling to a remote location in a country where I don’t speak the language was not something I had planned to do. This changed immediately after The Beach. From the first time I watched the movie, I wanted to travel to Ko Phi Phi where the movie was filmed and discover all hidden beaches in the world.
A number of years and lots of destinations and countries later, I was there, on The Beach, finally!
One of the reasons we decided to stay in Phuket rather than Koh Samui, for example, was that there are lots of scuba diving trips going from Phuket to Ko Phi Phi. So I found myself at the very very early morning in the hotel, waiting for the scuba diving operator to pick us up.
At least you don’t have to bring much more than your bathing suit, a towel, sunscreen and some water. The rest is all provided by the tour operator. We stayed at the Pullman Phuket Panwa Beach Resort which booked everything for us. From the hotel it took around 30mins to get to the boat from where our scuba diving excursion started.
A couple of hours later we arrived at the diving site in Ko Phi Phi where we had two dives with lunch and sun bathing in between. The marine life is really pretty there and the dive is super easy and relaxing. Hence perfect for beginners and divers that just want to have a relaxing a pretty dive.
Not only the underwater life but also the rock and island creations are incredibly stunning. As we only had one week in Phuket we didn’t book in extra days to stay on the island but if you have more days, this might be a great option to look into :) If the below pictures don’t convince you, just watch the movie The Beach!
Our way back from the island was during sunset which was also super beautiful. We sat outside on the boat, had a drink and just enjoyed the beauty of a sunset in a paradise setting :)
