A beautiful and impressive tomb designed by emperor Tu Duc to use before and after his death. The emperor ruled from 1848-83 – the longest reign of any monarch of the Nguyen dynasty. The tomb was constructed between 1864 and 1867. The emperor is not buried here though and it is not known where his remains are. To keep his grave secret from robbers, all 200 servants who buried the emperor were beheaded afterwards.
Plan in around two hours to visit the tomb and its garden and lakes. The architecture of the Tu Duc Tomb is simply stunning. The entire place is huge, so you are likely not disturbed by other tourists. Just bring a book, sit by the lake to enjoy the peaceful ambience.
